What it measures

The index follows the posted online shelf prices of the same products at Coles, Woolworths and Aldi Australia from one week to the next. Prices are in Australian dollars (AUD). It is not what shoppers paid, it is not the ABS Consumer Price Index (CPI), it is not weighted by market share, and it is not a forecast. The price used is the shelf price shown to every visitor, including promotions that need no card.

Coles is a partial slice, not the whole Coles range. Read Coverage and limits before quoting a figure.

Method, fields and citation

Each week's snapshots are compared with the week before, matching each product by the retailer's own id. The headline is the equal-weight geometric mean (Jevons) of the three retailers' like-for-like figures over the classes Coles reaches, chained from a base of 100 at 2026-W41. Prices that multiply by 3 or more, or fall to a third or less, in one week are left out.

Note on 2026-W42

Personal care rose 5.3% in 2026-W42 (base week 2026-W41). Most of the rise is at Woolworths: in the base week it had a half-price offer on vitamins and sports nutrition, and in W42 prices returned to normal. On regular prices (the was-price where one is shown) Woolworths Personal care rose 0.45% and the class was about flat. The index measures the shelf prices shown online, so promotions move it. The published value stays. Personal care added about 0.4 percentage points to the week's headline of +0.9%; without it the headline would have been +0.5%. Dairy and eggs (+0.9%) had the same pattern at Woolworths, where fewer products were on special than in the base week.

Release

The index is normally published on a Monday, after the Wednesday snapshot and the days in which a failed snapshot part can be rerun. A vintage is held if the checks described in the method fail. The first vintage was published on Thursday 15 October 2026: it added the base vintage 2026-W41 (level 100) and the first change week 2026-W42 together. Each week is added to the public dataset au-shelf-price-index as a vintage and is never revised afterwards. A correction, if ever needed, would be a new revision that is clearly marked. The dataset's general access is "Anyone with ID can read". The licence is CC BY 4.0.
